How to Deal with Feuding Coworkers

9/4/2019

Picture
You think your work life would run smoothly if you get along with your coworkers. However, if they’re feuding with each other, you could wind up caught in the middle.

Maybe an office romance has turned sour or two junior account executives are competing for one promotion. Maybe 40 hours of togetherness each week is just too much for personalities that are basically incompatible.

Whatever the causes, office conflicts often create stress and lower productivity.

How do you decide whether to intervene or keep your distance? Take a look at these suggestions for navigating a common workplace dilemma.

Tips for Intervening with Feuding Coworkers
You may need to take action if the battles are interfering with your ability to do your job. In some cases, you may also feel like you can help to restore harmony even if it’s not part of your job description.

Try these techniques to help resolve these situations:
  1. Stay neutral. Refuse to choose sides even if you’re friendlier with one of the parties involved. In fact, that may be a valid reason to work harder at overcoming any bias so you can interact effectively with both colleagues.

  2. Listen. Demonstrate your willingness to listen to different points of view. Giving each party an opportunity to vent can be constructive as long as you watch out for any signs that it’s developing into chronic complaining.

  3. Explain the impact. Your coworkers may be so caught up in their struggles that they fail to realize how they’re affecting the rest of the office. Letting them know how others feel could motivate them to settle their differences.

  4. Collaborate on solutions. Unsolicited advice can be tricky. Ask your coworkers if they want your suggestions. Offer to help them brainstorm their own options for how they can turn the situation around.

  5. Follow up. To create lasting peace, keep your eyes on the situation. Previous differences may spring back up in different forms.

Tips for Keeping Your Distance from Feuding Coworkers
On the other hand, you may prefer to watch drama on TV instead of dealing with it in the next cubicle. As long as you’re not in a supervisory position, you have alternatives to playing peacekeeper.

Consider these ideas:
  1. Document activities. Office conflicts can muddle communications and pull you in different directions. Be sure to create a paper trail and keep others informed of your activities, so you’re less likely to be held responsible for events beyond your control.

  2. Consult your colleagues. If you’re confused about what to do, try to talk with someone you trust. There may be others who share your concerns, and you’ll benefit from putting your heads together.

  3. Avoid gossip. Naturally, discussing your coworkers can be a sensitive subject. Ask yourself if what you’re saying is true and helpful.

  4. Approach a third party. If the office is becoming seriously divided, you may need to report the matter to your boss or to HR. If so, stick to the facts and make it clear that you’re eager to do your part to make positive changes.

  5. Encourage morale. While some differences are more difficult to reconcile than others, building team spirit can heal minor riffs and prevent others from developing. Propose activities that bring the company together, like group volunteer projects and occasional parties.

  6. Learn from experience. Keep in mind that conflict can be beneficial in the long run. Coworkers who learn to overcome their differences may form stronger bonds than those who haven’t faced any significant challenges. Conflicts can also teach us more about ourselves and clarify our values.

Office squabbles may sometimes be inevitable, but you can maintain healthy boundaries. At Altitude Business solutions we are business consultants, we work with our clients to come up with solutions to their problems and provide the services to both train or simply take care of the process for you.  It all starts with our Discovery Call where we will as you the questions to find out how we can help.  Ideally if we can guide you into the Australian Govenment ASBAS program we will.

Do you have what it takes?

Do you have what it takes?.When you’re aware of the obstacles you’re likely to face, you can prepare yourself and gather the proper resources before you need them. That’s a good start, but it’s not enough if you want to be successful consistently. It’s also important to be willing to transform yourself.

Attaining your goals isn’t just about having goals and doing the right things. That will work in the short-term, but you won’t have lasting success. It’s necessary to become a person that’s successful in the areas addressed by your goals. You can’t just change your behavior and expect long-lasting results.

For example, if your goal is to become a millionaire, you must become a person that deserves to be a millionaire. It’s necessary to have the belief system of a millionaire and the thought process of a millionaire. You have to be the type of person that takes intelligent risks and manages money well.

Cultivate the attributes that guarantee you’ll achieve your goals:
  1. Make a list of attributes necessary to deserve the achievement of your goals. Take each goal individually and consider the type of person that would achieve that goal. What attributes do you need?

    • More cautious or less?
    • More self-esteem?
    • A different attitude?
    • A new set of beliefs?
    • More outgoing?
    • More health-conscious?
    • More active?
    • More proactive?

  2. Create a plan for developing these characteristics. Find the resources you need to become a new version of yourself. The apply those resources each day to make the necessary changes. When you change yourself, everything in your life will change, too.

    • Some people allow their ego to get in the way and declare, “I’m fine just the way I am. I shouldn’t have to change.” You are fine the way you are – if you’re happy with your life! But taking your health more seriously, going back to school, or learning to speak French doesn’t fundamentally change who you are.

    • Be brave enough to discover what you’re capable of.

  3. Visualize the person you want to become. Once you can believe it, everything else will fall into place. Start convincing yourself that you have the new mindset and attributes by visualizing yourself with them.

Become the person you need to be. It’s important to be open to the idea of changing yourself and not just your behavior. When you change yourself, everything around you changes, too.

“No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change.”

- Barbara de Angelis

What does success mean to you?

Picture
What does success really mean to you? It’s important to clarify your thoughts, goals and desires before you can achieve success! You can’t work towards something passionately when you aren’t sure what the end result will be.  Success means many different things to different people. Unfortunately, the tendency is to view monetary gain as success. However, financial wealth is only a small part of overall success.

Different Areas of Success
Because there are different areas of success, you can be successful in one area and unsuccessful in others. In order to develop a plan for your success, it’s important to make your own list of areas that are relevant to you.

  • To achieve overall success in life, you’ll want to examine your priorities in each area.

For many of us, there are 3 main components of success. In your personal plan for success, there may be even more. Be sure to include any areas that are important to you.

Consider these three main areas:
  1. Career. Any number of things can be used to measure your success when it comes to your career. In your career evaluation, remember to determine what strengths and weaknesses you have that can help or hinder you from achieving your goal. Contemplate these questions:

    • Are you happy with your career?
    • Do you desire a higher status position?
    • What amount of income would make you happy?
    • Would you simply like to feel appreciated by your boss?

  2. Emotional. These questions can guide you to important considerations for your emotional success:

    • Are you satisfied with your relationships? Why or why not?
    • What have you learned so far that could help you do better in the future?
    • If you have children, do you feel successful in how you’re raising them?

  3. Health. Are you doing everything you can for your overall well-being? Maybe a change in diet and exercise is in order. Take a moment to evaluate whether you’ve achieved success in this area or if there’s room for improvement.

    • If your health can use a boost, make a plan to start implementing changes in your daily routine that lead to a healthier lifestyle.
 The Journey to Success
Your journey to success will have highs and lows throughout your life. There will be mistakes and disappointments. You may experience a setback at some point. The beauty is that you can get back on track and move closer to your goals at any time.

  • You may achieve new levels of success at different times in your life and career. As you progress in your job, start a family, and get involved in giving back to your community, your definition of success may change, as do your priorities. Go with the flow; it’s okay for your outlook on life and your meaning of success to change over time.

  • Love what you do! Life is too short to be stuck doing something you despise. To achieve success in life, work with what you’ve got. Focus on your strengths and interests and do the things that bring those to the forefront of your life.

  • Challenges and obstacles are opportunities for further success. Everyone has setbacks at some point in their lives. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be human. The successful individual has the confidence that he can and will do better!

Every so often, it’s very important to step back and re-evaluate your idea of success. There are so many changes in life and with each one you’ll find that your priorities change also. Never underestimate the power that comes from persistence and experience. Most importantly, though, remember to enjoy the journey!

8 Effective Habits for the successful entrepreneur

8/19/2019

Picture
Every career has a set of habits that greatly increase the odds of success. The habits necessary for success will vary from career to career. Fortunately, there are many successful entrepreneurs that we can look to for guidance. It’s not surprising that many of them share the same habits.

There’s no reason why you can’t have the same habits as some of the most successful people in the world!

Increase your odds for success with these habits:

  1. An incredible work ethic. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow a company. It's necessary at first to be a jack-of-all-trades. Until you can grow enough to hire others to cover all the required skills your company needs to thrive, you're going to have to carry a lot of weight.

  2. Conscientiousness. When you own a business, it's up to you to ensure that things are done properly and on time. The responsibilities are great. You don't have the luxury of putting out sloppy work. It will always come back to haunt you.

  3. Use time wisely. Time will always be a limited resource. How you use your time dictates how successful your company ultimately becomes. That means having the knowledge and experience to make wise decisions and the mental toughness to avoid distractions.

  4. Have a plan each day. One of the keys to using your time successfully is to plan for each day ahead of time. Avoid going to bed without having a detailed idea of what you're going to do the following day. When your feet hit the bedroom floor, you should already know what needs to be done for the day.

  5. Wake up early. There are very few successful entrepreneurs that don't get up very early. Some get up even before 4 a.m. How early you get up is up to you, but if you're not beating the average person out of bed, you're behind.

  6. Set goals. It's not enough to work hard and work smart. You also must know where you're going. Goals help you make wise decisions. Know what you're trying to accomplish today, this week, this month, this year, and 10 years from now.

  7. Deal with stress effectively. Entrepreneurs have plenty of stress to deal with on a regular basis, so it's important to learn how to manage it. Have a process for dealing with stress and anxiety. Learn to recognize what you can control and what you cannot.

  8. Look ahead for obstacles. Avoid being blindsided by obstacles and setbacks. Be aware of your future. Look ahead for the challenges that you're likely to face and have solutions in mind.

    • Think of all the major challenges in your life and notice that there were plenty of warning signs for all of them. The same is true with your business. Avoid putting your head in the sand and hoping for the best. Deal with challenges now while they’re still manageable.

What are your current habits? Can you see why your current habits have either helped you or harmed you on your path to business success? Think about what you want to accomplish to be successful and build a set of habits that will support those activities.

The person with the best habits usually wins. How far will you go with your habits?

A Remote Worker’s Guide to working from home

8/12/2019

Picture
Balancing your home and career can be a challenge for any employee, especially when you live and work in the same space. How do you allocate your time between personal and professional responsibilities? How can you focus on conference calls when you’re surrounded by dirty laundry?

Learn how to set priorities and reduce distractions whether you’re new to remote working or you moved out of your cubicle years ago. Use these tips for staying peaceful and productive when you work from home.

Steps to Take by Yourself:
  1. Follow a schedule. Set a start and end time for your day. Tackle your most challenging tasks during the hours when you’re at your peak. When it’s time to quit for the day, leave your job behind.

  2. Design an office. Designate a separate space for business. It could be a whole room or a corner in your dining room. Decorate your space with pictures, art, and objects that you find inspirational and uplifting.

  3. Change clothes. You may not want to wear a suit and tie but changing out of your pajamas will help you to feel more professional. Hang up your bath robe and get dressed each morning.

  4. Limit distractions. Do you waste time watching TV or checking social media? Ban leisure activities during business hours except during break times.

  5. Take breaks. Speaking of breaks, take them. You’ll be more productive if you refresh your mind and body periodically.

  6. Wind down. Do something at the end of each day to help you transition into an off-duty mindset. You might listen to classical music or take a walk in the park.

  7. Get organized. Create routines and systems that encourage efficiency. Buy a cabinet for your office supplies. Use an online calendar to block out your time.

  8. Continue learning. Career development matters whether you work at your dining room table or in a corner office. Take a course online or order a catalog for the adult education program at a local university. Read industry publications and general business news.

  9. Evaluate your performance. Conduct your own job evaluations. Look for ways to increase quality, save time, and manage stress. Update your strategy as your goals evolve.

Steps to Take with Your Family, Friends and Colleagues:
  1. Talk with your boss. It will be easier to balance your life when you and your boss agree on overall expectations. Negotiate the flexibility you need to succeed.

  2. Post your hours. Ensure your boss and coworkers know the hours that you’re available. Discuss arrangements for how to deal with emergencies that occur outside of those times.

  3. Go out for lunch. Your midday meal is a daily opportunity to stay connected while you work at home. Plan a weekly date at a local cafe to catch up with your office friends or other employees who work from home.

  4. Remain visible. Make business lunches and other events part of your strategy for cultivating your network. Show up at the office on a regular basis for staff meetings, birthday parties, and other gatherings. Volunteer at the local chapter of your professional association.

  5. Pull together. A strong support network helps you to build your confidence and accomplish more. Ask your family and friends for the emotional and practical assistance you need. Let them know how much you appreciate them and pitch in when they need a hand too.

You don’t have to give up life balance when you give up your commute. Enjoy more health and happiness by drawing sensible boundaries between your personal and professional activities.

13 Things you can do when you can't take a vacation

8/5/2019

It’s been called a staycation, or a vacation spent on your home turf. It’s possible to have a better vacation at home, since you’re saving so much money on travel, lodging, and food. You can spend some of that money at a high-end restaurant or golf course. There’s no reason to be upset if you can’t afford a week in Paris. You can find plenty to do at home!

Avoid the stress of traveling, sleeping in a different bed, and paying too much to eat every meal at a restaurant. Spend that money on more enjoyable activities.

Enjoy your vacation at home:

  1. Spend the day at the beach. If you’re lucky enough to live near a lake or the ocean, a day at the beach is a good way to spend the day. Work on your tan and get some exercise swimming.

  2. Spend the day at the pool. Those without access to a beach can take advantage of the next best thing: the local pool. Splurge for snacks and live it up.

  3. Go for a long bike ride. Your bike might be hiding behind the lawnmower or beneath the rake, but it’s ready to go. Add some air to the tires and go out for a long ride. Look online for bike paths and popular routes.

  4. Have a picnic. Whether it’s at the park, pool, or beach, a picnic provides a relaxing, enjoyable time. Pack your favorite foods and bring your favorite people. A bottle of wine can be a nice touch.

  5. Attend a sporting event. Professional sports are exciting, but expensive. If an NBA game is out of your budget, check out the local high school team. Sports can be exciting at any level.

  6. Read a book. It can be hard to find time to read when you always seem to be busy with work. Take advantage of your free time and relax with a good book. You might even find the time to get a library card. Then your books are free.

  7. Visit a local museum or zoo. Most people go out of town to visit the zoo or museum. Now is the time to check out your local offerings.

  8. Spend a day at the movies. Pack in three or more movies in the same day. The real cost is the food. Consider watching one movie, then heading out for lunch. You’ll be full and satisfied for the next couple of movies.

  9. Have friends over for a movie night. Stay at home and rent movies on demand. Invite over a few friends and tell them to bring their favorite snacks.

  10. Rent a boat. Rent a speedboat or sailboat for the day. Test out your skills and spend some quality time on the water.

  11. Check out a local band. Get out for an evening and enjoy the local music scene. Enjoy the nightlife for a change of pace.

  12. Go out for a fancy lunch. Since you’re not spending money on a vacation, you might have the funds available to have lunch at that fancy restaurant downtown. Splurge a little bit and enjoy yourself.

  13. Work on your golf or tennis game. You’ve always said you’d be great at golf if you just had the time to practice. Now you have the time. Consider taking a few lessons and concentrate on improving your game.

A staycation can be a better option than going out of town. The sights might be familiar, but you’ll have more money to spend on entertainment if you stay at home. Use your vacation time wisely, get out of the house, and enjoy your time off.

At Altitude Business Solutions we work with you to come up with solutions to your business problems and set a plan for implementation.  It all starts with our Discovery call where we will find out more about your business and discuss options for you moving forward.  For Queensland Small Business Owners we will also discuss the Government Funded Australian Small Business Advisory Services program and if your business can take advantage of discounted services.

14 Ways to Relax Without Alcohol or Food

7/16/2019

Picture
Happy hours can be a great way to unwind after a stressful day at work. You bond with your coworkers, talk about your day, and listen to some upbeat music. On the other hand, if you make such activities a regular routine, you could be taking in more alcohol and empty calories than you want.

Plus, you may be training yourself to think that consumption is the only way to relax.

You can’t remove stress from daily life, but you can learn to deal with it without creating more troubles. Start with these ideas for relaxing without alcohol or food.

Calorie-Free Ways to Relax on Your Own:
  1. Breathe deeply. Pause and take a few calming breaths. Inhale from down in your diaphragm instead of up in your chest. Lengthen your exhalations to match your inhalations. Focus on the air as it moves in and out of your nostrils.

  2. Meditate and pray. Sit down for a few moments and connect with yourself and the divine. Observe your thoughts without judging them. Give thanks for your blessings.

  3. Engage in visualization. Close your eyes and imagine something that makes you feel happy and inspired. Picture yourself surrounded by family and friends or excelling at a task that you find fulfilling.

  4. Draw a bath. Fill your tub with warm water and enjoy a luxurious soak. Buy fragrant bath salts or make your own. Set out fluffy towels, candles, and other accessories of your choice.

  5. Stretch your body. Make it a habit to stand up about every half hour when you’re working at your desk. Place your hands on your lower spine for support, and do a slight backbend. Rise up tall, and reach your hands down to the floor, bending your knees if necessary.

  6. Take a walk. Stroll around the block or hike the trails at your local park. Pick a quiet time of day and explore new routes.

  7. Appreciate nature. Scientific studies prove that nature has the power to soothe us. Head outdoors or watch videos about sandy beaches and ancient forests.

  8. Learn progressive relaxation. Experiment with progressive muscle relaxation. Start with your hands, squeezing each muscle group as you breathe in, and releasing as you breathe out. Continue across the rest of your body.

Calorie-Free Ways to Relax with Others:
  1. Practice yoga. Yoga cultivates community as well as stress relief and physical fitness. Bring a friend with you to your next class. Invite others to join you for breakfast afterwards.

  2. Play sports. As long as you avoid extreme competition, sports can be relaxing. Schedule a game of tennis or darts.

  3. Go dancing. Take listening to music a step further by getting out on the dance floor. Sign up for rumba lessons or spend your next date night at a club with a live band.

  4. Pet your dog. Remember your animal companions too. Studies show that talking to them actually tends to be less stressful than interacting with humans because we don’t worry about being judged.

  5. Talk it over. On the other hand, your fellow humans are probably going to have more insights into how to deal with your love life or conflicts at work. Call a friend when you need to vent or discover a different perspective on whatever is on your mind.

  6. Laugh it up. Humor makes our struggles easier to bear. Spend time with others who encourage you to see the funny aspects of parenthood or practicing law.

Whether you’re on your own or surrounded by friends, you can banish stress safely and effectively. Learning to relax without alcohol or food will help you to stay slim and peaceful.

7 strategies for dealing with negative people

7/11/2019

Picture
Anyone that has to deal with negative people on a regular basis knows just how challenging it can be. All the complaining and ‘doom and gloom’ talk can really sap your energy and patience. At the conclusion of a mere 15-minute conversation, it can feel like the life has been sucked right out of you.

The good news is you can lessen the effects of their negativity by coming up with a plan to deal with this challenge.

Try these strategies:
  1. Be objective. It’s important not to take the negative person’s comments personally. Recognize that they’re pessimistic most of the time and take an unhelpful perspective of most things. They can be so absorbed by their negative thoughts that they have a difficult time being tactful. In reality, you might feel a little sorry for them. Aren’t you glad that you don’t carry the same negative attitude about life? It’s difficult to be upset with someone when you feel sorry for them.
  2. Keep the conversation light. It can be very helpful to steer the conversation to lighter topics, like the weather, movies, or sports to keep things from getting too intense. Some people simply enjoy feeling the emotional intensity that comes from being negative.
  3. Avoid rewarding negative talk. Sometimes we inadvertently encourage the negative person by being too supportive.
Instead, don’t engage fully in the conversation when someone is being overly negative. Instead, be enthusiastic and supportive when they’re being positive. Keep your responses and attention to a minimum when the negative talk is flying.
  4. Try not to be alone with them. You won’t feel the brunt of the abuse when there are others to share the grief. Plus, the negative talker will usually be less intense when he doesn’t have the undivided attention of a single person. It’s also much easier to excuse yourself from the conversation because you don’t feel like such a critical part of the interaction.
  5. Make a concerted effort to limit the amount of time you spend with them. Every positive and negative experience in your life has some effect on you. So take care of yourself and avoid spending more time with them than you need to.
  6. Be a positive influence. You might be able to help the person feel more optimistic by being a positive influence in their life. If you think they’re simply lonely, perhaps you could get a group together and all go out for dinner. Or maybe you could suggest a hobby. See if you can identify a specific cause for their negativity and then assist.
  7. Eliminate them from your life. Especially if you’re kind-hearted, you’ll most likely want to save this option as a last resort. Sometimes we have people in our lives that don’t have to be there, and it doesn’t make sense to maintain the relationship if that relationship only brings you negativity.

Negative people are a fact of life and something that we all must deal with from time to time. These strategies will help you keep their negative effects on your life to a minimum.

The 4 step guide to making tough decisions

7/4/2019

Picture
When it comes to making decisions that take you out of your comfort zone, it can really be emotionally trying.

The only way around those decisions is to be untrue to your beliefs. And that's an approach you most likely want to avoid. Your conscience is bound to eat away at you if you go that route.

Instead, try this process to help you make those tough decisions with confidence:

  1. Weigh the alternative. When a tough decision looms overhead, you know there's always an alternative. It's probably easier to go with that alternative, and save yourself the stress. But at what cost?

  • If you're honest with yourself, you'll realize that the tough decision may be the best decision from a moral standpoint. It's hard to go wrong when you go the moral route!

  • Avoid making decisions that you know may rest on your conscience forever. Those make it difficult to live with true peace of mind.

  • Consider the outcome. Usually, difficult decisions work out for the better in the end. But what you're worried about is those who may not be pleased with the decision. The toss up is between two glaring options. Do you continue in a less than favorable situation? Or do you decide to make a change for the better?

  • A great way to justify making a hard decision is to look at the outcome. Do you see yourself in a more positive situation after you make this decision? Can you envision life being less stressful?

  • Always remember what you're trying to achieve in life. Make your decisions based on your goals, whether big or small. Avoid living according to the goals of others if you want to be truly happy.

  • Limit the advice you take. In some scenarios, advice is very helpful. However, in others, it can easily cloud your judgment. When making a tough decision, go with your gut. It's usually correct if you're aligned with your conscience!

  • When you start to hear several different opinions, you can get confused. Of course, you can be courteous to everyone offering their suggestion. You may want to respectfully listen to everybody who's trying to help. But listen with one ear!

  • It's possible to hear the advice and not take it to heart. It's also possible to weigh everybody's feedback and filter the ones that aren't helpful.

  • Think outside your comfort zone. Remember that life in general tends to be uncomfortable. While you would prefer otherwise, it's a reality you just sometimes have to face. When you prime your mind to think of discomfort as the norm, those tough decisions become easier.

  • Nobody likes to be uncomfortable, especially for extended periods. But that's what you'll be if you avoid making the tough decision when it’s necessary for your well-being.

  • If you know something is right, aim to block out all the noise and listen to your conscience.

  • You may end up losing friends for the decision. But you may gain so much more as a result, too. Consider peace of mind, a clear conscience and genuine happiness. These can all be yours when you decide to do what’s truly best for you.

So focus on the task at hand, and what accomplishing it can help you achieve. If the end result of your decision betters your situation and supports your goals and conscience, then you can be confident that you’ve made a wise decision – even if it was tough.
